BLOODSUGARSEXMAGIK (To Infinity):
New Work by Rebecca Ebeling
11.06.09-11.30.09

MANIAC presents Bloodsugarsexmagik: To Infinity new work by San Francisco based artist Rebecca Ebeling conjoining the spectacular and bizarre with the processed and manufactured to construct a binary alternative hosting visual segments of space, empty regions and atmospheres, (images and ideologies traditionally agreed upon) as an alternative to a consumerist adherence to ideas of the unfathomable.

Ebeling’s vision is a remixed version of fantastically designed plastics, foam core, neon, and cutouts. Chronicling the vastness of sheer nothingness (space/intangible) as the equal partner of our material (manufactured/tangible) culture in regards to creation and mysterious variable, Ebeling’s process is multi-faceted working across painting and collage to construct a third or alternative range of transcendental understanding.

Specific to Ebeling’s work is the idolatry of pop culture and the mass appeal. Assembling an alternate narrative in relation to the ethereal, Ebeling presents a disregard for what is suggested as truth and knowingness destroys the beautiful and serene, while creating a wild void that borders recklessness. In Ebeling’s world, an examination of life becomes a raid, a glorious sculpture is covered in hi-gloss black paint on one side, while extravagant gold leaf and hot fuchsia roses and the magnificently ornamental reveal themselves on the reverse.

Bloodsugarsexmagik: To Infinity presents Ebeling’s resolution to the unknown: existing within gross excess and grandeur, substituting the holy grail of the status quo for a bold reproduction made of neon and glue, Ebeling’s alter-verse is bravely deconstructed with a transience that artificially recreates the story of the universe circa 2009.

Bloodsugarsexmagik: To Infinity marks Rebecca Ebeling’s first solo show in Los Angeles. Since receiving her MFA from California College for the Arts (2008) Ebeling has exhibited widely including Sam Lee Gallery (Los Angeles, CA), The Spare Room Project (San Francisco, CA), Southern Exposure (San Francisco, CA), Rhodes Furniture Warehouse (Champaign, IL), and the Nave Gallery (Brookline, MA). Ebeling will be featured in New American Paintings, Issue 85 this December 2009.
